 Biographical Information

 Who Are the Plainview Lions

The Plainview Lions are your neighbors, friends, and coworkers who have joined together to
serve the community.  We are part of the largest community service organization in the world:
Lions Club International.  We share a common vision of helping others through various
community service activities right here in Plainview.  Activities such as sponsoring the annual
Christmas tree pickup, Corn on the Cob Day Parade, Hwy 42 cleanup and the Old Fashion
Christmas sleigh rides.  We raise funds in order to sponsor youth-oriented programs such as
chartering the Plainview Boy Scouts, providing academic scholarships, sending developmentally
handicapped individuals to Camp Winnebago, and funding eyeglasses for needy citizens who
cannot afford them.  We collect used eyeglasses for the Lions’ vision project SightFirst.  But
most importantly, we share in the camaraderie of the group and we have FUN!!  doing these
 projects.

 Lions International

The Plainview Lions are part of the International Association of Lions Clubs that started as a
dream of a Chicago insurance agent, Melvin Jones, who  wanted several existing independent
clubs to form into one strong, influential organization for service to humanity.  The leaders of
these clubs met on June 7, 1917 to form the Association of Lions Clubs.  From that humble
beginning, Lions Clubs International has grown to over 1,401,875 members organized into
44,909 clubs located in 186 countries and geographical areas.  The early Lions were energized
by a speech given by Helen Keller at the 1925 Convention when she urged the Lions to take up
the cause of the visually handicapped and become “knights of the blind in the crusade against
darkness.”  This challenge was accepted and is the basis for today’s Lions Clubs’ involvement
in sight conservation programs, collection of used eyeglasses for recycling, support of training
centers for seeing eye dogs, and other vision service activities.

 Plainview Lions Club

On November 29, 1967,  23 prominent citizens of Plainview were sworn in as charter members
of the Plainview Lions Club under the sponsorship of the Winona Sunset Lions Club.  Since
then, the club has been involved in many significant activities in the community.  The club has
served as the charter organization for Boy Scout Troop 57.  They built a 20 x 44 picnic shelter
 in Carley State Park.
They have donated FM amplifying equipment for the hearing impaired at the Plainview
Elementary School, and to various other programs at the Plainview High School.  Since 1967,
numerous residents have served as Plainview Lions over the years.  The clubs’ activities
have changed as the needs of the community have evolved and as the talents and desires of the
members changed.  While fundraising is necessary to support LCIF and community projects, the
main focus is on community service.  The club also has a social side to it with an annual
spouses Christmas dinner and an annual summer picnic meeting at Carley State Park.
